This song is inspired by a prayer of Ted Loder's, one of my favorite modern poets and writers. I brought his book Guerilla's of Grace with me on my pilgrimage to Scotland, and at a moment I was feeling especially discouraged about music and songwriting I read the prayer below and it inspired me that God loves our dreams and considers them a precious offering.
Keep Me in Touch with My Dreams
By Ted Loder
O Lord, in the turbulence and the loneliness
of my living from day to day and night to night,
keep me in touch with my roots,
so I will remember where I came from
and with whom;
keep me in touch with my feelings,
so I will be more aware of who I really am
and what it costs;
keep me in touch with my mind,
so I will know who I am not
and what that means;
and keep me in touch with my dreams,
so I will grow toward where I want to go and for whom.
Lord, I ask not
to be delivered from the tensions that wind me tight
but I do ask for a sense of direction
to move once wound,
a sense of humor at my disappointments,
a sense of respect
for the elegant puzzlement of being human,
and a sense of gladness for your kingdom,
which comes in spite
of my fretful pulling and tugging.
lyrics
O God out of nothing, you made everything there is.
In the midst of this something, give me more of what I dream, but haven’t dared in the midst of this crushing uncertainty, where I can’t see you.
O God in the storm you quieted the sea.
In the midst of my struggle could you calm me?
From my fears and these hopeless wanderings into your freedom.
Chorus
All of my doubts Lord, all of my fears
All of my hopes Lord, all of my dreams
Into your hands I commit these things
Help me to see your dream for me.
O God out of nothing, you made everything there is
In the midst of this something, give me more of what I dream, but haven’t dared in the midst of this crushing uncertainty, where I can’t see you.
